The Meat and Mushroom Diet – Look Magazine, March 1962

The Meat and Mushroom Diet is a very low calorie quick weight loss diet that first appeared in Look Magazine
in March 1962. Average weight loss is 5-10 pounds a week. You eat 9-12 ounces of lean meat a day – beef,
lamb or veal. Most patients have 3-4 ounces of meat for breakfast, 3-4 ounces of meat for lunch and 3-4 ounces
of meat for dinner. Or skip breakfast and have 6-8 ounces of meat for lunch or for dinner. The easiest way to
follow this diet is with 1/4 pound hamburgers from McDonald’s, Wendy’s or Burger King, or with regular roast
beef sandwiches from Arby’s. No buns. In addtion to your meat, you have 18-24 large mushrooms a day, raw
or sauteed in boullion – or you can have 1 1/2 cups of canned mushrooms a day. You can also have 1/2 cup, 3
times a day, of chopped onions or green peppers or spinach or tomatos or asparagus or green beans. This is a
very low calorie diet, usually 700-800 calories a day, for very quick weight loss.
