If you don’t like grapefruit, the Hot Dog Diet is a popular alternative. The Hot Dog Diet first appeared in Look
Magazine in August 1963. Breakfast is the same thing every day, 1 fruit (1 peach or 1/2 canteloupe or 1
tangerine or 1/2 grapefruit), 1/2 cup skim milk, 1 egg or 1 ounce (1 slice) of cheese. Lunch is 1 hot dog wrapped
in white or wheat bread (no bun, a slice of bread has half the calories and carbohydrates), 1/2 cup sauerkraut, 2
black olives OR 1 hot dog in bread, 1 cup pickled green beans, 1 dill pickle OR 1 hot dog in bread, 1 tomato, 3
green olives OR 1 hot dog in bread, 1 cup cabbage slaw (in vinegar not mayonaise), 2 sweet pickles. Dinner is 2
hot dogs wrapped in white or wheat bread, a green salad, any vegetable from the lunch menu, any vegetable
from the breakfast list. Most patients lose 5-10 pounds a week on this 800-1000 calorie program. If you eat low
fat hot dogs (Best Kosher 99% fat free hot dogs are excellent), you’ll lose fastest. Ketchup, mustard and relish
are fine.
