The Dukan Diet

The Dukan Diet

The Dukan Diet is the most popular diet in France and the UK. The book is being released in the US in April.
Dukan is basically the Stillman Diet (with a gimmick that makes no sense), and he limits water instead of pushing
it. On the Stillman Diet, the most important thing you do is drink 80-120 ounces of water a day to prevent
dehydration from the rapid fat burning.. On the Dukan Diet, he limits you to 1.5 liters of water a day. This can
lead to seriously problems (and potential ER visits) from dehydration. Dukan’s gimmick is that you follow
Stillman the first week (if it can’t walk, swim or fly, you don’t put it in your mouth – unlimited low fat meat, poultry
and fish only), then you add unlimited 5% vegetables (low carbohydrate vegetables) every other the second
week and from then on. Aside from kidney damage from potential dehydration, the biggest problem with the
Dukan Diet is patients also absolutely don’t tolerate very low fat ketogenic diets (like Stillman) for more than a
week or two. The drop out rate is astronomical, and there are horrible muscle cramps if you don’t aggressively
push salt. Finally, the amount of oat bran that Dukan says you must eat ever day isn’t going to do anything for
constipation, unless you eat enough oat bran to get in trouble because of the carbohydrate content.
