There are 4 artificial sweeteners on the market in the U.S – Nutrasweet (aspartame), Splenda (sucralose), SweetnLow (saccharin) and Truvia (stevia). You might want to try all of them, to see if they satisfy or trigger your sweet and starch cravings. Some patients do well using artifical sweeteners, they find that they satisfy their carbohydrate cravings. Other patients find that artificial sweetners trigger sweet and starch cravings. Nutrasweet turns bitter when you cook or bake with it, but Splenda, SweetnLow and Truvia all are okay for cooking. Another interesting problem with Nutrasweet, is that use tends to increase over time. Patients who start adding 1-2 packets of Nutrasweet to a glass of iced tea, often end up adding 7-8 packets to that same glass of iced tea, a month or two later. I like Splenda in cooking, in low carbohydrate cheesecake for example. But I do not like Splenda in hot or cold drinks. In beverages, I like Nutrasweet. I don’t love either SweetnLow or Truvia in hot or cold drinks, but I prefer either of them to Splenda in beverages. Raid Starbuck’s sometime, and see which you prefer, if any.
