Skip breakfast – and start losing weight

Some patients do better eating 1 meal a day. That’s what I do. I very seldom eat anything at all until 8pm or
9pm. The worst thing I can do is to eat before then, because it makes me tired and hungry. If I don’t eat all day,
I feel fine. Other patients do better eating 3, 4 or 6 small meals a day. You already know how often you should
eat. There’s no science suggesting that 6 meals a day is better than 1 meal a day in terms of weight loss. Your
body processes all calories the same way, whether you eat them once or 14 times a day. Same thing applies to
the time you eat. There’s no difference in the way your body processes calories eaten at 8am or calories at
midnight. Your car doesn’t care whether you put gas in once a day, 6 times a day, or put gas in at 8am or
midnight. But there is a tremendous difference in individual well-being, depending on if you are a 1 meal or a 6
meal a day person, and what time you eat. Many patients start losing weight, simply by not eating breakfast – by
not eating anything at all until they are hungry. There’s no science that suggests eating before you get ravenously
hungry is helpful. You already know when and how often you should eat. Always go as long as you can without
eating. That’s how you lose weight.
