Paleo diets don’t work for weight loss. Paleo isn’t a bad way to maintain weight for some patients, but for weight loss it’s a disaster. I prefer eating whatever you want 1-2 days a week, instead of Paleo forever maintenance, because the bet is you aren’t going to stay on Paleo forever. Paleo diets are unlimited meats, nuts, eggs, fruits and vegetables. No grains, no flour products, and no (or very little) dairy products. The idea is that you are eating as our caveman (paleolithic) ancestors ate. We were hunter-gatherers. Farming has only been around for 2000 years of 600,000 years of homo-sapien evolution. The problem is that I can almost guarantee you will not lose weight eating paleo. You probably won’t gain weight, but you could. The culprits are the fruit, the nuts, and their concept of freely feeding or eating until you are full. I hate eating until you are full, because way too many patients eat 2 pounds of steak or 2 whole chickens, and (of course) don’t lose weight. Nuts provide way too many calories, and way too many carbohydrates, way too fast – for sustainable weight loss. Fruit provides way too many carbohydrates, way too fast, for sustainable weight loss. And freely feeding on a dozen plus eggs a day, doesn’t work either, if you want to lose weight.
