Low carb vs. low fat – freely feeding – neither work

Low carb vs. low fat – freely feeding – neither work

The big mistake most patients make on low carb and on low fat diets, is the insane notion that you can eat as much as you want. You absolutely, positively cannot eat as much as you want, of almost anything, and expect to lose weight. On a low carb diet, you can’t eat a dozen eggs for breakfast, and bacon and sausage, and expect to lose weight. You are eating almost no carbohydrate, but I’ve seen patients pack away 3000 plus calorie breakfasts (IHOP doesn’t sell an omelet with less than 1200 calories), and then bitch because they are not losing weight. On a low fat diet, you can’t eat a dozen bagels for breakfast either. You are eating almost no fat, but I’ve seen patients eat 3000-4000 calories a day of fat-free carbohydrate, and then bitch because they are not losing weight. If you want to lose weight, fast enough to stay motivated to stay on your diet, you probably have to keep your calories under about 1500. You’ll lose weight faster and feel better on a low carbohydrate diet. But you can’t eat as much as you want.
