Low carbohydrate baked goods and desserts are often far more caloric than the high carbohydrate real versions of the same foods. Substituting almond meal or coconut meal for flour can cut the carbohydrate content by 75% in cakes, cookies and baked goods, but it also can triple the calorie content. Substituting heavy cream for milk does the same thing. Carbohydrate content can go down by two thirds, but calorie content can triple. This is the reason most low carbohydrate baked goods and sweets are psychotic. Way too many calories, way too fast, and they contain even more calories than the real food.
