The magic of 500 calories

The magic of 500 calories

If you don’t significantly limit your carbohydrate intake, the bet is you’re not going to lose weight or keep weight
you’ve lost off. The good news is that you don’t have to limit your carbohydrate intake every day, every other
day will work for weight loss, if you also significantly limit your calories on your carbohydrate-eating days.
From a biochemical perspective, and I did a fellowship in biochemistry before medical school – if you limit your
calories to 500-600 a day, it really doesn’t matter what you eat. On 500-600 calories a day, your liver glycogen
supplies will deplete or begin to deplete, making fat storage less efficient. So the secret to eating carbohydrates
on a diet, is to keep your calories as low as possible on your carbohydrate-eating days, ideally no more than
500-600 total calories. This way you can eat what you want, and not store too much fat.
