The mistake most patients make, is that they go on a maintenance diet – thinking it will make them lose weight. Maintenance strategies are about damage control. The problem is that damage control usually does not create a big enough calorie deficit for weight loss. Low carb diets can be good maintenance. But to lose weight on a low carb diet, fast enough to keep your motivated, you need to go on a very low calorie, low carb diet. A paleo diet can be good maintenance. But to lose weight on paleo, especially with the carbs from fruit and nuts slowing down your weight loss, you need to keep your calories at 500-600 a day.
