Binging 103

Binging 103

Binging is more common than most people think. 10%-30% of patients have some kind of binge behavior. The
first approach to controlling binging is to try to control sweet and starch cravings. The good news is that sweet
and starch cravings dramatically decrease after 3-4 days on a low carbohydrate diet, eating 20 grams or less of
carbohydrate a day. Often within a week on very low carb programs, binging stops. The second approach to
control binging is forcing fluid. Fluid helps, because if you keep your non-caloric fluid intake high, at least a
gallon (128 ounces) a day, it’s hard to pack in tons of calories on a binge. Fluid in combination with
carbohydrate can make you feel very full. If you are a chronic binger and can’t seem to stop, trying drinking 12-
20 ounces of non-caloric fluid every waking hour for 2-3 days. Drink water, coffee, tea, diet pop – anything
without calories. It’s surprising how often pushing fluid can help stop binging
