More on the new drugs for weight loss – GLP-1 and DPP-4 Inhbitors

GLP-1 is Glucagon-like Peptide 1. It’s one of the 4 hormones that primarily control your weight. The more GLP1 that is circulating in your body, the less fat storage, and the less hungry you are. There’s also relatively new class of medications called DPP-4 Inhibitors (Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4 Inhibitors) that inhibit the breakdown of GLP1 in the body. So once again, the result is that you store less fat and you’re less hungry. An interesting side effect of the combination of GLP-1 (Victoza, Symlin or Byetta) and a DPP-4 Inhibitor (Januvian, Onglyza, Tradjenta), is that your carbohydrate cravings will also likely be far less. You’ll find it much easier to stay on a very low carbohydrate diet and lose weight.
